At Modularie, we believe in using high-quality, locally sourced materials to create beautiful and long-lasting furniture. This commitment starts with the wood itself.
Eastern White Pine: The Perfect Choice
Our furniture is primarily crafted from Eastern White Pine, harvested from sustainably managed forests in the picturesque lakes region of northeastern Pennsylvania. These sawmills specialize in hardwoods, log homes, and lumber specifically for the flooring and furniture industry.
Eastern White Pine offers several key benefits for furniture making:
- Lightweight and Strong: Despite its softwood classification, Eastern White Pine boasts surprising strength and stability. This makes it ideal for tables and benches that need to withstand everyday use.
- Light and Airy Aesthetic: The naturally light color of Eastern White Pine creates a warm and inviting feel, perfectly complementing the modern contrast of the hot-rolled black iron frames we use in our designs.
- Warp Resistance: To further minimize movement and warping, we specifically select wide boards, typically 10" or 12" in width. These wider cuts come from the heartwood of the log, which is naturally more stable and less prone to seasonal fluctuations in temperature and humidity.
Processing the wood
- Planning: We utilize a planer to ensure each board has a perfectly flat and even surface, crucial for a clean and professional finished product.
- Cutting and Ripping: Using precise saws, the boards are cut to the specific dimensions required for each furniture piece. Wider boards are then "ripped" down to narrower widths to achieve the desired design.
- Sanding: Each piece is meticulously sanded to achieve a smooth and finished texture, both aesthetically pleasing and comfortable to the touch.
- Edging: Any rough edges are carefully addressed using specialized tools to create a clean and polished look.
